Ahmad Ibn Fadlan was a 10th-century Muslim traveler who recorded his journeys as part of the embassy of the Caliph of Baghdad to the Volga regions. In these territories, Ibn Fadland came into the contact with the people known as “the Rus”, who were considered to be Varangians (i.e.
Vikings) from the Baltic regions. These individuals were known for their trading and raiding activities throughout Europe. Ibn Fadland’s account is one of the very few sources to describe the habits, activities, and customs of the Vikings in Europe.
