The Evolution and Paleobiology of Dinosaurs
DUE on Tuesday, March 2, 2021 (by 5 pm)
Essay Assignment on a current event related to the topics that we cover in this course
400 words (at least), but no more than 500 words; roughly 1.5 pages double-spaced.
As you know, I enjoy sharing with your current news items that concern dinosaurs or other related topics that we discuss at the beginning of each class period. I think it makes paleontology more relevant and current and cultivates good critical thinking skills: What is the question or problem being addressed? What is the evidence? Is it compelling? What do the researchers conclude, and does their evidence support their conclusions?
Search for a recent news story (in the past 24 months) on dinosaurs, pterosaurs, marine reptiles, etc.
Please choose a topic that you are interested in learning something more about!
Begin your essay with a title and your name, then include the URL that was your source. (2 points)
In your essay, answer each of these three questions:
Why did you choose this particular news story? What interested you about it? (6 points)
Explain, IN YOUR OWN WORDS, what this news story is about: (16 points; 4 each)
What is the question or problem being addressed?
What is the evidence, or what kind of evidence is it?
Do you find the story convincing? Why or why not?
What was the result or conclusion they reached?
What did you learn from it that you didn’t already know? (6 points)
