Destruction of Human Embryos Discussion
please respond to the following discussion post as a peer.
Stem cell research offers great promises for understanding basic mechanisms of human development and differentiation, however, human stem cell (hSC) research also raises sharp ethical and political controversies. The first ethical issue is that during human stem cell research, the process involves the destruction of human embryos. This is seen as controversial in the United States and many other countries.
The question of when human life begins has been highly controversial and closely linked to debates over abortion (Lo &Parham, 2009). Secondly, Oocyte harvesting, which is essential to the creation of human embryonic stem cells raises concerns related to the safety of the donor. Other important ethical issues related to obtaining informed consent of both donors of gametes and embryos as well as recipients of stem cells and stem cell products. Additionally, there has been some concern related to the commercialization of the process, justice, and the responsible conduct of research. There have been many attempts to minimize the ethical issues associated with human embryonic stem cell research so this type of research can continue to proceed. As a result, professional groups have issued guidelines for the ethical conduct of this research and its oversight (Sugarman, 2008).
