Different Ways of Filing Medical Records
Respond back to these two posts.
1.There are several different ways of filing medical records. Three main ways that are common today are serial, unit, and serial unit-numbers. While they sound similar, they are different. The serial filing method is every time a patient is seen and their records are pulled, they receive a new medial record number.
They do not keep the same number the whole time. This is a way to keep track of all the records that have recently been pulled in a numeric order. The unit filing system is where the patients keep the same medical record number for every encounter per facility. The medical records do not change depending on the number of office visits.
The serial-unit numbering system sounds similar to the serial filing system however the differences is that with the serial-unit numbering system the patent only gets a new medical record number when they are seen, for each visit. While the serial filing system gets. New medical record number for each time the record is pulled.
2.The healthcare system is complex and it requires an organization system, in order to function as is required. Having a numbering system helps keep individual files, so there is no confusion as to what information belongs to whom. Also, it helps with obtaining information for health insurance reimbursement. In the system of healthcare, there is the serial unit numbering, serial and unit numbers. This numbering system provides a unique identification number.
A serial number is a number which is given to a new patient so they have an identity, thus it makes it easier for the hospital to pull up information about their health record. In the serial number system, the patient number is assigned by the provider and a new patient record is created.
Serial unit number system combines the serial and the unit number system together so it can create a unique identification for an inpatient visit. This provides differentiation so they do not confuse both the serial number with the unit number
