Discussion about American Politics and Government
You must respond to one of the following questions in your essay. The essay should be double-spaced and not exceed five pages in length. If you don’t use the class definitions to define terms, you’ll lose points. It is not required to conduct research. You should have enough information to answer the question from the class resources (book, handouts, and class notes).
1. Write three or more amendments to the Constitution that you would add to make the United States a more democratic country at the top of your essay. The reader should be convinced after reading your article that your recommendations will advance democracy. Make sure to talk about what democracy is and, where applicable, how its traits could be more completely realized. If you want to get rid of the electoral college, explain what you’re going to replace it with and how it’ll work, as well as how this will help democracy. If your proposal calls for the winner to be the candidate who receives the most votes, consider how that candidate might receive less than 35% of the vote in a crowded field.
2. If people organized and formed much stronger labor unions, they could persuade the government to impose higher tax rates on the wealthy while lowering taxes on everyone else; to significantly raise the minimum wage; to guarantee free higher education and health care for all; to meaningfully address environmental issues; to provide housing for all; and, perhaps, to reduce military spending and, perhaps, to eliminate it altogether. Explain. Make sure you define democracy and explore how the aforementioned recommendations would affect democratic features.
3. Does the US government provide greater service to the wealthy than it does to the working class? Explain. Provide particular examples and government regulations to back up your claims. Defeat the beliefs of someone who disagrees with you. Discuss and connect your arguments to government policies that benefit employees, such as social security, food stamps, public transportation, and CCSF financing.
4. Describe the qualities of democracy and discuss how well they correspond to actual U.S. practices. You must compare and contrast how power is dispersed in a democracy and in the United States. Is there a problem with democracy in the United States because of the amount of power held by the wealthy and corporations, especially in relation to the amount held by working people, who make up the majority of the population? Is it true that firms that want to maximize profits are undermining democracy? (Don’t talk about how the phrases elite and popular democracy, as well as the three branches, are used in textbooks.)
5. Does voting for who you want to be president, who you want to represent you in Congress, and who you want to represent you in state and local government make a substantial impact in what happens in the United States and how power is used by the government and big business? Is voting a way for the majority of the population to influence society’s direction? Explain. Do the options on the ballot now allow for a diverse range of viewpoints? Is it necessary for individuals to vote? Why do you think that is?
