Discussion Essay on Modern History
Significant political, social, and economic changes occurred in the United States in the two decades following WWII. The global victory over the fascist Axis Alliance’s brutal racism, as well as the liberation of colonial regimes, particularly in Africa, showed the evident prejudice inherent in racial segregation. As the nation grew fascinated with the pent-up want to enhance individual’s quality of life, many members of the armed services became aware of the mismatch between American ideals and reality as the nation became absorbed with the pent-up desire to better individual’s quality of life. While most Americans became wealthier, following data proved that many residents were left out of the rich culture. Prejudice based on race and ethnicity was still evident. Citizens who openly criticized fundamental inequity were seen with deep distrust as a tragic result of the aggressive McCarthyism spectacle. Brown v Board of Education, the Supreme Court’s decision, compelled complacent Americans to confront the horrific superstructure of institutional discrimination. Dr. Martin Luther King’s Southern Leadership Conference organized a sustained civil disobedience campaign that received widespread media attention. As the scope of public protest grew, legislation was enacted in the early 1960s aimed at essentially eliminating political traces of racial discrimination and expanding opportunities for women, veterans, and people with disabilities.
Explain the accomplishments and controversies of domestic conditions in the United States over this time period, as well as the causes that caused complacency to prevent substantial progress in resolving these issues for so long.
