Discussion of Survey Research Issues
When survey techniques research is well-designed and implemented, it takes into account legal, ethical, sociopolitical, and cultural concerns and tackles them appropriately. Some of these concerns include the legality of utilizing specific participants, the types of questions that can be asked, and what can and cannot be done with certain controversial and potentially damaging material, as well as ensuring that the project does not break any laws. Safety, informed consent, privacy, debriefing information, resources, and transparency are all ethical considerations that revolve around the protection of participants. Fairness, representation, exclusion, and demographics are all representational of the population of interest in sociopolitical concerns. Finally, language justice, as well as religious, ethnic, and other cultural components that would improve the study’s and data’s quality, are all cultural challenges.
As a psychologist, and especially as a survey researcher, all of these concerns are related to cultural competence. In survey research, cultural competence refers to the idea that as a researcher working with a specific sample from a population, you are competent in terms of judging that sample.
Select two legal, ethical, sociopolitical, or cultural challenges relating to survey research for this week’s assignment, and consider how you might address these difficulties when conducting survey research. Then, in order to best assist social change, you’ll evaluate the possible benefits of survey research for promoting cultural competence in psychology.
