Discussion on Committee Structure and Effectiveness
You work as a charge nurse on a surgical unit from 3:00 PM to 11:00 PM. You’ve been chosen to chair the safety committee for the unit. You have a short committee meeting with the other committee members once a month. The major responsibility of your committee is to report any safety concerns to the appropriate authorities. You’ve noticed an uptick in needle-stick instances recently, and the committee is working to solve this issue.
Two nursing assistants, one unit clerk, two staff registered nurses, and two licensed practical nurses/licensed vocational nurses make up the committee. All shifts and cultures of the personnel are represented. You’ve noticed that the meetings aren’t going well lately since one of the group members, Mary, has taken over the meeting time. She is very vocal about the dangers of HIV, and she appears to be more concerned with assigning blame for the needle sticks than in finding a solution.
You’ve spoken individually with Mary about her habit of disrupting committee meetings; despite her apologies, her behavior has continued. You believe that some committee members are becoming bored and restless, and that the committee is not making much progress.
DQ: Using your understanding of committee structure and effectiveness, describe the steps you would take to encourage more group engagement and increase the committee’s productivity. To avoid Mary from taking over the discussion, be detailed and describe exactly what you would do at the next meeting.
