Discuss Work and Childcare Pressures in the Family.
How do families handle all of the demands and responsibilities placed on them? We learned about the pressures of Labor (both at home and at paid work) and the cost of CHILDCARE this week. The need to understand how other countries deal with these difficulties is emphasized in this chapter.
1) What impact does workplace insecurity have on families? Part-time work, seasonal work, and low-wage jobs without health insurance or daycare all affect family dynamics. Even persons with advanced degrees have a hard time finding a full-time job. Has the 2008 economic collapse or the current recession have an impact on your family?
2) Since COVID, we’ve seen a slew of large corporations declare bankruptcy or lay off thousands of employees. This is a structural issue in our society, not a lack of desire to work. This is happening all around the world, as we can see. Which countries provide better support to their citizens? What are their methods for accomplishing this? What can we learn from these other countries that we can apply to our own economy?
3) Gender imbalances at home: Can you think of any examples of gender inequalities in your own life? When you were a kid, what kind of jobs did your parents have at home? What messages did you receive about your responsibilities at home? Is that something that’s changed as you’ve gotten older? Will you raise your children in the same manner as you did?
