Discussion on Remote Sensing and Aerial Photography
Sea-Floor Mapping and Marie Tharp
Marie Tharp was an American geologist and oceanographic cartographer who co-created the first scientific map of the Atlantic Ocean floor with Bruce Heezen. Tharp’s work showed the ocean bottom’s intricate topography and multi-dimensional geographical geography. Wagner’s idea of continental drift was bolstered by Marie Tharp’s map, which gave new light on landform research and internal processes:
To see a thorough map of Tharp’s work, go to the following link: Click here for more information (Links to an external site.)Please respond to the following questions after reading the ESRI story map:
For the first time, the use of vertical exaggeration and depiction of Tharp’s knowledge as a physiographic diagram revealed what the ocean floor was like. Why is it that the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and its rift valley are clearly visible, with details that old contour maps could not display or understand?
What kind of data did Tharp use to create fracture zone trends?
Aerial photography and remote sensing
Aerial photography has been around for almost 150 years, and it arose from a desire to picture from above. James W. Black is thought to have fired the first aerial shot in the United States from a balloon near Boston in 1860. Having access to remote sensing photography allows geographers and geologists, among others, to spatially see the workings of landform research.

Access various featured historic aerial pictures by going to the website’s Features area. Examine the aerial photographs in this section by selecting the option for ‘The D-Day Landings.’What aspects of the D-Day invasion’s actions have been caught via aerial photography?
What specific aspects of the invasion can you deduce from the photos?
On the second page, click on the Features area of the website. Choose ‘Camouflage, Concealment, and Deception’ from the drop-down menu. It’s difficult to conceal anything as large as an airstrip or a cruiser from aerial cameras, but take a close look at the photographs in this section.
Airfields, warships, oil refineries, and rocket launch sites were all hidden from overhead photography in some way.
Google Earth is a virtual globe created by Google.
Google Earth is a sophisticated application that creates a 3D picture of the Earth and allows you to use the renderings to tell a visual story. Create a 7-slide presentation on the topic of the 7 Principal Rock-Forming Families from the Chapter 13 lecture, including the following:
Where can you find it?What is the mechanism of the formation?
