Discussion on the Palestinian-Israeli Conflict
Last week, Hamas, a Palestinian political party based in Gaza on Israel’s southern border, launched a barrage of rockets into Israel’s sovereign territory, possibly in anticipation of an upcoming Israeli Supreme Court eviction decision regarding property currently housing Palestinians in the West Bank. Israel has retaliated with a barrage of rockets and has bolstered its border with Gaza with troops and tanks. The smell of war is in the air, and this is not the first time it has happened.
This is a study initiative aiming at broadening our understanding of a complex, emotionally charged, and highly politicized issue. The goal is to educate ourselves, to challenge our beliefs, to be open to new information, and to create respect for all sides of the debate.
There are a few podcasts available in the Apple Podcast shop and other podcast locations that have helped me comprehend both sides; all of these include both current events comments and history from diverse perspectives:
1. Palestine Remembered (presented by Yousef Al Reemawi on 3CR Community Radio in Australia);
2. The Institute for Middle East Understanding’s This is Palestine; and
3. What Every Jew Should Know (hosted by American-Israeli Jason Harris).
With this in mind, please conduct research, consider, and write a seven-page paper that addresses the following topics:
1. Geographically, where are Palestine and Israel, and what does that geography mean?
2. Who are the Palestinians and what do they want? And who exactly are the Jews?
3. What is the origin of the Zionist movement? Is there a Palestinian counterpart?
4. Both Palestinians and Zionists have asserted “claims” to Palestine’s land. What are the foundations of each?
5. What role did Britain and the Balfour Declaration play in the establishment of Israel as a sovereign state?
6. Was there a Palestinian Arab equivalent of the Balfour Declaration or any arrangement signed on their behalf/with them prior to the establishment of the state of Israel?
7. When, how, and why did Israel become a nation-state?
8. How did Palestinian Arabs and other Arab neighbors respond to the establishment of the state of Israel?
9. For more than 70 years, the state of Israel has existed and has been torn apart from within and without its borders. Moreover, despite the fact that over one million Palestinian Arabs are Israeli citizens, millions more live as refugees outside of Israel. Fighting continues. The Palestinians do not have their own state….
WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE?
Please ponder and ANSWER the topic of “what now,” and propose a solution to the ongoing standoff between stateless Palestinians and the state of Israel.
Please cite ALL quotes/data with footnotes/in-text notes AND include a good bibliography, as always.
