Discussion Paper on Letters to Legislators
The impact of public policy on your practice and your patients is significant. The advanced practice nurse is expected to advocate. What their constituents have to say is important to elected authorities. You must be informed and involved in order to make a difference. Nurse leaders must be able to communicate with their legislators and address issues. You should be pleasant and impartial in your interactions with legislators, as well as personal, persistent, patient, focused on your message, and providing correct facts.
Letter or Email: The student must write three (3) letters or emails, or a mix of letters and emails, to the legislators they have identified (State and/or Federal). Three separate legislators may receive the same letter/email, or three distinct legislators may receive three different letters/emails. Legislators read letters, particularly if they are personalized and plainly from a constituent.

When writing to your representative, keep the following standards in mind:
Use your own words and keep it short (one page or less).
Begin with a suitable title and address.
Don’t be vague: In the opening sentence, state the bill number and issue, as well as your viewpoint.
Tell us about your experience with the problem. When possible, use personal examples. It’s crucial that you’re interested in the topic and concerned about it.
Inquire whether the legislator will support or oppose the legislation you’re writing about.
Inquire about the particular grounds for their support or opposition to the idea.
Your name should be signed and printed, as well as your address and any contact details.
Include any relevant documents or editorials from local papers if you have them.
Use APA format to cite references at the end of the letter or email.
If at all possible, avoid using form letters or emails. If you’re going to use a sample or form letter, make sure to change the opening sentence and paragraph. Letters are recognized by legislators and their aides, and they are less likely to be persuaded by them.
Thank him or her for taking the time to consider your viewpoint.
Word documents, as well as a one-page reflection on your experience.
