Discussion Paper on Personality Formation
Maury is a new-to-private-practice clinical psychologist who works on a fee-for-service basis, which means he doesn’t accept insurance.
One of the people he’s been working with is a 20-year-old male who was suggested by his parents, who Maury had previously seen for parenting advice for their younger child. This patient’s parents are still financially responsible for him, and they were writing the checks that the client would bring to pay for therapy.
After a few months of seemingly good improvement, the client became disillusioned and began to devalue Maury and the treatment; he abruptly ended therapy, still paying a balance of almost $600.
Maury had a strong relationship with the client’s parents, and he believes they would be willing to pay the remaining debt. Maury does not have a signed Release of Information saying that he can speak with the client’s parents because the client is an adult.
Discuss what Maury can do to get the money owed to him. What ethical concerns and issues should he be aware of? How can he avoid a situation like this in the future?
