Dubut Orchestra
On Friday, October the 1st, I attended Debut Orchestra which is performed on Eli and Edythe Broad Stage. There are three pieces of music. The first on e is The Sorcerer’s Apprentice by Paul Dukas. The second one is Asyla, op. 17 by Thomas ADEs, the last one is Symphonie fantastique:
An Episode in the Life of an Artist, op. 14. By Hector Berlioz. I was there about one hour early before the performance. There were few people hang out the flyers. And some people were there to ask the audiences just to make sure they go to the right place for the performance they want to attend.
There were more audiences arrived as it was close to the performance time. Some people were really formal with suit or nice dress. Some are very casual. When I first entered the performing room, there were few performers on the stage.
They were practicing with their instruments. As it was getting more close to the performing time, there are more performers arrived on the stage. They all practiced with their own instruments which made very loud and irregular sound of music. Performers dressed formal with all black. The formal dressing made me feel profession.
The first piece is The Sorcerer’s Apprentice which is a symphonic poem by the French composer Paul Dukas, written in 1896-97. The instrumentation of the piece consists of two flutes and piccolo, two oboes, two soprano clarinets and bass clarinet, three bassoons and contrabassoon, four horns, two trumpets, two comets, three trombones, bass drum, harp and strings. This piece begins with a soft beginning with minor scale and then the sound crescendo. The dynamic is loud with fast tempo and major scale towards the middle.
And then I heard a bassoon solo from slow tempo to fast, low dynamic to high dynamic. Finally, this piece end with sound from horn that was crescendo. The second piece is Asyla, op. 17.
This is an orchestral composition by the British composer Thomas Ades. It was finished in 1997 and has been performed widely. This piece starts with an untitled movement with flat piano, which is immediately followed by the horns and the high-pitched sound of the strings. The atmosphere becomes much more agitated when the rest of the orchestra joins in progressively. The second movement begins abruptly and suddenly changed to a soft melody played by the bass. Then then the strings take over. The sound started to dissipate towards the end of the movement.
The third movement of this piece has a steady rhythm. This is my favorite movement; it gives me very relax feeling compare to the previous two. The music is much more insistent than the previous movements and is much more vivid and lively.
The last movement becomes calmer at the beginning after reaching a climax echoed by the strings. And then suddently turns violent when a tutti chord initiated by the horns bursts towards the end of the piece. It ends in a quiet atmosphere.
The last piece is Symphonie Fantastique: An Episode in the life of an Artist, op. 14. This is a program symphony written by the French composer Hector Berlioz in 1830. I was favorite in the second movement of this piece.
The second movement has a mysterious sounding introduction which creates an atmosphere of impending excitement. It makes to have a desire to hear the rest. It followed by a passage dominated by two harps. And then the flowing waltz theme appears. The movement is the only one to feature two harps which is providing the glamour and sensual richness of the ball. When I listen to this piece, I think of my home town China. I miss my family there and it is been a long time no see them.
I enjoyed the entire concert with the professional performance. It also made me more aware of the diversity of style and compositional techniques inherent in the music. The audiences were very enjoyed the entire concert. We were all quite and respected to the concert.
