What is your NARROW research topic?(See our lesson on narrowing the topic). Explain your topic and why you are interested in it. Answer in a paragraph (approximately 200 words).
My narrow research topic is the economic impact on the countryof the refugees between age 18-56 who entered into North America for more than 5 years. The reason why I am interested in the topic is that as a foreigner who studied in Canada, I understand how difficult a foreigner in finding a job at local market. I also know that some of the elder immigrants from my homeland China, are unable to find jobs in their expertise. For example, my coach in driving used to have a bachelor’s degree in China at the field of electronic engineering. However, he is unable to find the related job in Canada due to the language barrier.
Which made me think that how could refugees who suffered a lot from the war and unable to receive education and language training to start a new life in Canada and United States. What kind of resources do they need?
And what is the percentage of those refugees finding a job and become self support financially?
For the rest of the refugees, how much financial support do they need individually or as a family unit?
What is your SPECIFIC RESEARCH QUESTION?What do you want to find out?(See our lesson and Ebook). Write your question here.
What are the economic effects of accepting refugees on Canada and United States?
What BACKGROUND INFORMATION do you need to find out?(For example, “I need to research what the current laws are for…” or “I need to find out the number of orphans living in institutions…”)
I need to find out how many people are accepted by Canada and United States in the past 20 years. And the demographic information of those refugees. For example, their education level, age and gender. Since those factors would affect their chances of being employed. And also, I’d like to know the employment rate of those refugees after five years they entered into those countries. Since five years is a transition period and allows those refugees in learning the language or receive training in certain area. I also want to know the welfare expense Canada and United States invest each year in accepting and founding those refugee group. Last but not least, I’d like to know how significant the training to the employment of the refugees is.
Do an INTERNET SEARCH and/or scan a relevant Wikipedia entry on your topic. Look specifically for some useful vocabulary or special termsthat you might need to use in your research. List at least 10 terms here.
UN refugee agency, urban refugee, refugee camp, durable solutions, integration and naturalization, internally displaced person, seeking asylum, refugee rights, PTSD, canvas ceiling, refugee crisis.
What are some things you are still thinking aboutor things you need to decide about your research inquiry? Answer in a short paragraph (approximately 200 words).
I am thinking about the refugee’s problem is complicated and hard to solve. The employment problem of refugees is way different than the employment problem of immigrants. And multi-factors decide the employment situation for the refugees. Since the people I studied for are the group of refugees who came to United States and Canada for the sake of the safety. They usually grow up in a war environment and had barely opportunities in education. They had hard time in becoming a qualified employee for the companies in North America even after the employment assistances provided by the government or NGO. I’d like to investigate more on the successful examples of improving the employment rate for refugees in those developed countries. And I think those successful examples could give me some inspirations in “ how to improve the employment rate”. Additionally, I need to find if there is any discrimination or privilege refugees have in their job seeking process. And in order to evaluate the financial needs for a developed country in accepting refugees. I also need to know about how much should a country cost in transporting those refugees to their destinations.
