An “elevator pitch” is a concise, carefully planned, and well-practiced marketing message about your professional self. The exercise was developed from the concept of selling yourself to a complete stranger on a short elevator ride. Your pitch is a useful tool for introducing yourself at career fairs, networking opportunities, or even the “tell me about yourself” question in an interview. Your elevator speech for this assignment will be 2 to 3 minutes. Directions:
This assignment will involve answering interview questions, recording your responses to these questions in the form of an elevator speech, and uploading the video to Canvas. The final step is to provide peer review to classmates.
1) Interview/Elevator Speech Questions
1. Tell me something about yourself. [Tip: Keep answer focused on the job you’re applying for and state your experience].
2. What makes you think you’re qualified to work for this company? In this answer tell us 3 main qualifications, and for each one of qualifications provide specific examples to support why you are qualified. Explain how these qualifications would benefit the employer.
3. State your goal(s) — where do you see yourself in 3 to 5 years.
4. What major challenges have you faced, and how have you dealt with them? Include an example to support what you discuss as a challenge. [Tip: Share admirable qualities you demonstrated as you worked through a problem or difficult situation. Goal is to show how you responded to adversity].
5. What are your greatest strengths? Include ONE example to support what you discuss as a strength [Tip: Link these greatest strengths to aspects of the job].
