• Read Chapter 37on pgs. 392-396 in the Norton Field Guide regarding the Cause-effect writing strategy.
• Alsonote the files that have been posted to the checklist for the Week of 8 Feb 2021 in the D2L Course website. You should read them carefully and integrate the concepts to this essay.
• A cause-effect essay shows the audience the relationship between something that happens and its consequences, or between actions and results. For example,
o If too much commercial fishing is allowed in the Atlantic Ocean (action), the fish population in some areas may decrease or disappear (result).
• Cause-effect essays can be analytical, informative and insightful.
o Kinds of Cause-effect essays: those that focus on causes in which the writer focuses on the causes of a situation or those that focus on effects in which the writer emphasizes the effects or results of a cause.
• For example, a topic could be quitting a job. The writer needs to choose between a cause essay and an effect essay.
o Cause: why something happened
You can choose to write an essay on why people quit their jobs. Decide on possible reasons they may have for doing so. Why does something happen?
o Effect: what happens
You can emphasize the effects of quitting a job – perhaps discuss the consequences or results or effects. What happens when ….?
