ENGL 110 Final Project
The final project for English 110 consists of three-parts. Part one asks you to do secondary research, part two asks you to undertake a questionnaire, and part three asks you to write a letter of transmittal that includes a summary of findings. In essence, youll be asked to initiate a
fictional report, and although you wont write the actual report itself, youll perform both primary and secondary research for it and offer a summary of your findings in a letter of transmittal.
Part One: Secondary Research
Its important to first inform yourself of specific topic before youre able to develop a survey and draw conclusions from the results. Refer to Chapter 19: Secondary Research. This chapter explains the difference between secondary sources drawn from the Internet and sources drawn from books and periodicals.
Research one of the topics listed below by selecting a minimum of five sources to meet the requirements of reliability as explained in Chapter 19: Secondary Research. For each of the five sources provide a bibliographical entry (formatted in MLA, APA, or HBS). Under each of the entries provide a brief summary of the content of that source.

Your secondary sources should be informative and as nonbiased as possible (or they must cover both sides of an issue). Your grade for this section will be determined by reliability of sources, accuracy of citation, and clarity of summary.
Part Two: Questionnaire
Next refer to Chapter 18: Primary Research. Develop a short survey (8 10 questions) to collect information from a minimum of 10 people on your topic. Ideally you would interview a variety of people.
Depending on the subject matter that you choose, your questions may seek to discover peoples knowledge, their habits, or their opinions about a topic.
When I mark this section of the project, Ill consider the quality of your questions. For example good questions should be specific and leave little doubt in the interviewees mind about what is being asked; they should not be leading questions, eliciting a specific response; they should be varied and interesting; they should adhere to the recommendations provided in the Chapter; and they should be working towards a specific outcome.
For example, if you were to compose a questionnaire on the topic of online dating, the questions should relate to a single research question such as one of the following: Habits of online dating, preference for online or face to face, experiences of online dating, or opinions regarding the morality of online dating. In other words, focus your intended research question.
Part Three: Letter of Transmittal
After gathering the results of the questionnaire, compose a letter of transmittal, or a kind of enclosure card or cover letter (Holt 232) as an external or internal communication. It should explain the research question and results of the questionnaire. It should be approximately 300 words (letter length). It should be addressed to a fictional but topic-appropriate recipient. In this section, like the prior section, youre using your imagination to conceive of a worthwhile and actual scenario.
Remember the importance of compositional clarity and polish. In other words, your grade in the section will depend upon adherence to letter-writing guidelines, understanding of the purpose of the letter of transmittal, and the depth of content suggested by your findings and expression of ideas.
Sample Topic: Household Chores
If I were to choose the topic of chores in the home, Id first consider whether I wanted to ask questions about peoples attitudes towards this or about their current behaviours. I decide I want to shape my questionnaire around their current practice.
Thus my research question is which family member does the most work in the home. I neednt share my research question with my interviewees because I dont want it to influence the responses.
