The goal of this project is to improve your research skills as well as your understanding of modern food systems. You will choose a food commodity and conduct research on its origins, as well as how it enters the global market and ends up on your or someone else’s dinner plate.
This assignment will teach you how to get the most out of the searches you may do with Google and other search engines. You will compile the “best of” what you discover into a brief report. A bibliography will be included in the report. Your top findings will be listed in alphabetical order by last name of the author. In your bibliography, you should have at least ten sources. In class, we’ll do a more in-depth search. All of your sources should be PDF files that you can access online!
You must first choose a food commodity. Here are a few recommendations: Coffee, wheat, bananas, soy beans, corn, sorghum, rice, mangos, kiwi fruit, salmon, grass-fed beef, potatoes, tuna, olives, tea, chocolate, vanilla, sugarcane It should be reasonably simple to research, and it should be related to agriculture and food markets. This isn’t advanced or technical research. If you don’t want to read them, stay away from them.
Second, you’ll need to organize your choices. For example, you can use the following search engine to find government records about Monsanto soybeans: In Google, go to Advanced Search. It’s a closely guarded secret: http://www.google.com/advanced search. The top of the Advanced Search page is this.
