Environment and the Indirect Environment
Now, we’ll turn to the crux of strategy making: SWOT Analysis! Analyzing the external environment (this Discussion Board) and the internal environment (next Discussion Board) of the organization in question is at the heart of strategy making! Only after analyzing both, could one soundly devise a strategy!
If done well, youll then know the S trengths, W eaknesses, O pportunities, and T hreats ( SWOT ) of a company.
First , when you’re analyzing the external environment of a firm, you are looking outside the chosen organization. You could break that big outside environment into three (3) smaller environments (in a sense, direct influencing, indirect influencing, and globally influencing). The direct environment is called the Task (or Industry) Environment and the indirect environment is called the General (or Societal) Environment. Michael Porter created a neat way to consider some elements of the Task (Industry) Environment (inner concentric circle): 5-forces Framework model (new entrants, substitute products, buyers, suppliers, intense rivalry amongst existing firms) –https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porter%27s_five_forces_analysis. Also, heres a little video on the master Michael Porter, as he discusses his famous 5-forces model: https://youtu.be/mYF2_FBCvXw. The next outer concentric circle is the General (or Societal) Environment. The furthest outside concentric circle, if you will, is the global environment, which is really the worlds natural environment.
Now use ANY company (hopefully one we’ve heard of) and list, describe ( in detail ), and discuss a few elements of its external environment (Task; General; Natural). Google around! Again, in doing so, name some 1) opportunities , and 2) threats to the firm in question.
