The purpose of this assignment is to compare a performance of classical music to a performance of pop/rock music while utilizing musical language to describe your thoughts.
The following are the course objectives:
CO-1: Recognize Western music styles and eras.
CO-2: Apply musical vocabulary, concepts, and critical listening skills to a specific composer or musical style.
CO-3: Examine the influences of social, political, and cultural factors on Western and non-Western music.
Description:
Choose an extract from one of two concerts: one from a pop or rock concert of your choice and one from a Classical Era (1750-1800 AD) performance from the list below. Each concert is roughly 10 minutes long. (Please note that the rock or pop concert you choose should be one you see or attend during this course, not one you saw or attended before.)
After watching the musical snippets, make a comparison of the two concerts and respond to the following questions:
1. Describe why you liked or disliked the concerts.
2. Examine the parallels and differences between classical music and rock and pop music. Make sure to mention specific musical aspects of the concerts, and convey your thoughts using musical language and information from the course materials.
3. Compare and contrast the types of people who went to classical performances vs those who go to rock or pop concerts nowadays, as well as the reasons why people went to classical concerts versus rock or pop concerts today. (Be sure to substantiate your comments regarding concerts during the Classical era with specific material from scholarly sources.)
4. Examine how new technologies, such as digital media and the internet, are altering how people listen to music.

This paper should be between 750 and 1000 words long. This work should demonstrate that you have read and comprehended the course materials. Specific information from scholarly sources should be used to back up points, and musical language should be employed to describe concepts. This paper should be prepared in paragraph format, with whole sentences, a clear introduction, and a clear conclusion. In the introduction and end, make sure to mention both shows.
