Essay on Creating a Place in Creative Writing
Any piece of creative writing should elicit emotion, but creative nonfiction, particularly memoirs, depends on it. In this activity, we’ll look at how we express feelings about a certain location in our lives (or your past). You will write three brief paragraphs (each with a minimum of four sentences) describing this location in three steps. As an author, I anticipate you to focus more on word choice that increases mood and expresses emotional links to the subject matter, as opposed to our earlier activity of practicing vivid description.
1st step:
Consider your favorite location. It could be any type of home or structure. Perhaps it’s a room. Perhaps it’s a one-time event held at a certain site. Whatever it is, write one paragraph describing the location – not just in terms of what it looks like, but also in terms of how it makes you feel and how you feel about it. What makes it feel welcoming and warm, or odd and wonderful? Are there any particular items therein that have a special meaning for you?
Step two:
Destroy the location of your choice. Consider the possibility of its annihilation. This can take numerous forms, ranging from a natural calamity to simply being neglected or overgrown. Write a new paragraph detailing how this location appears now. Consider what feelings arise when you do so. While thinking and writing about the loss of something you care about (even if it isn’t true) can be difficult at times, it can also help us recognize deeper thoughts about things, and perhaps help us realize more what we enjoy about its existence.
3rd step:
Rebuild. Imagine someone (a familiar face or a future stranger) discovering your favorite spot and deciding to clean it up, repair it, or repurpose it. Write about this new location in the final paragraph. So, what did they do with it? Is there anything that reminds you of the original space? That have been granted a second chance at life? Always keep an eye out for word choices that portray a strong sense of mood. This may be a paragraph that inspires hope or, at the very least, a sense of progress and change.
