Instructions:
The length of your essay should be 7 double-spaced typed pages (do not exceed 10 pages). Your paper should be written in 12-point Times New Roman font. Your footnotes should be in Times New Roman with a font size of 11 as well. A title page and a bibliography with all of your cited sources should be included in your paper (both of these pages will not count towards your 7-page length). The paper must present an argument backed up by secondary source analysis on the topic you’ve chosen (minimum of at least 2 secondary sources and 1 primary source.) The content, organization, and style of the paper will be graded. It should adhere to the term paper format outlined in the download Formal Paper Writing Guidelines. You will have the option of writing your paper on ONE of the topics or questions listed below. Choose a topic or question that is meaningful to you and on which you feel comfortable writing. The paper must be submitted as a Microsoft Word document. Make sure it’s your work; Canvas has a plagiarism checker turned on (see our syllabus about our policy about plagiarism).
To answer with specific examples, choose ONE of the following questions (bring in examples from our text, our readings, our films, and our documentaries). At the end of your first paragraph, provide a thesis statement or main argument, and stick to it throughout your paper. For each part, explain the concepts/ideas and provide specific examples. To gain a better understanding of these topics, you will need to conduct additional research. (Write in an academic tone and double-check spelling, grammar, and punctuation.)
Colonial Legacies and Central Conflicts (Spain and the Aztecs). Discuss some of the colonial era’s “central conflicts,” our “colonial legacies,” which would shape the region for centuries to come: Native peoples’ conquest, subjugation, and exploitation (native slavery, the encomienda); diseases and demographic collapse (which ones? When? What are the ramifications? ); the transatlantic slave trade (how did this happen?). How many are there? To what regions and for what purposes? ), as well as the emergence of race as a hegemonic concept (why is this important? ), and patriarchy as a hegemonic concept. and talk about how these would affect the modern era (the 19th-21st century). Culture, transculturation, language, and music, for example, are not necessarily negative legacies.

Manifest Destiny is a term used to describe a group of people who Describe the emergence of “Manifest Destiny” in the United States, including what it is, how it came to be, and how it affected Native Americans in the United States (the Cherokee, Plains Indians, and Native Peoples of the West) in the nineteenth century. Explain how the United States came to take half of Mexico, as well as how the Mexican-American and Native American populations who lived in the territories taken from Mexico in 1848 (California, New Mexico, Arizona, and Texas) fared after that. Give specific examples for each section.

Reconstruction and the Civil War Era Why was it so difficult for the United States to establish or maintain a democracy/republic in the nineteenth century without civil war? Was Reconstruction a “success” or a “failure”? Why are we asking that question in the first place? What is the best way to phrase that question? Was there an unprecedented level of political terror and violence during the Reconstruction years?
