GEOLOGY 100 – FINAL EXAM IN PHYSICAL GEOLOGY (30 percent of course grade)LOCAL GEOLOGY (PART A) (15 percent )
Parts A, B, and C should be delivered to your Final Exam assignment folder as a single document.
Discuss and describe the geology of your region and place in paragraph style (state and local area, or country and local area – if you are overseas). Make sure you cover all ten of the following geologic issues in respect to your region: Note: The study must be written in paragraph style and in your own words, not as a list or a cut-and-paste job. Geographic location (precise name, latitude and longitude, and relative placement) (national or regional)
Tectonic plate motion and setting, including the position and type of the nearest plate border
Surface material may be present, depending on bedrock types and geologic age (local and state or regional)
Description of the topography (exact local elevation and highest elevation in state or region)
A description of the terrain (plains, valleys, hills, mountains, plateaus, coastal, desert, etc.)
Geological features that are significant or distinctive (National Parks, fossil sites, caves, reefs, waterfalls, fall lines, etc.).
Geologic dangers (earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides, floods, sinkholes, etc.)
Past and present glacial influences (if any)
Resources of minerals and energy (if any)
A drainage basin including important rivers, lakes, and key aquifers may be included.
You’ll need to undertake some local and regional geological studies for this section. You are free to use any of the course materials.
Physical Geology, 2nd ed. textbook, my Webliography (Content), and any Internet sources, including the USGS, state geological offices (see Webliography for a state list), scientific organizations, and local government offices; however, all sources must be properly cited in APA-style at the end of Part A. Use graphics to accompany your descriptions of your local geology (e.g., geologic maps, diagrams, pictures, satellite images, etc.).
Citations in APA Format:EARTHQUAKES OR VOLCANOES IN PART B (5 percent )
To complete this component of the Final Exam, consult the textbook Physical Geology, 2nd ed., my course Webliography (Content), and online geologic research sources. At the end of Part B, sources must be mentioned in APA-style citations.Choose one of the options below and tick it, then answer the questions that follow:
The eruption of a large composite volcano
(1) The plate tectonic setting, which includes plate boundaries and the sort of earthquake or eruption most likely to occur.
(2) Make a list of four (4) possible geologic risks that could arise as a result of the earthquake or eruption.
(3) What physical and human dangers could arise as a result of the earthquake or eruption?
Use graphics (e.g., maps, diagrams, pictures, satellite images, etc.) to complement your descriptions and discussions where appropriate.Citations in APA Format:
GLACIERS, SEA LEVELS, AND GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGE (PART C) (10 percent )
To investigate and finish this component of the Final Exam, consult your Physical Geology, 2nd ed. textbook, my course Webliography (Content), and the Internet. For research on global climate change, sea-level change, and the cryosphere, particularly glaciers, carefully review the Webliography. At the end of Part C, you must identify all of your research sources with full APA-style citations. Finally, prepare an essay on two of the four subjects listed below:
1. The natural and human sources of global climate change, as well as their relationships.
2. The effects of global climate change and sea-level rise.
3. Changes in glacial and polar sea ice, as well as their responses and links to global climate change.
4. Why are glaciers the best cryosphere components for demonstrating global climate change scientifically?Use graphics (graphs, maps, diagrams, pictures, satellite images, etc.) to complement your descriptions and discussions where applicable. In each of the four subjects discussed, make careful to include particular geologic examples.

RUBRIC
Excellent Quality
95-100%
Introduction 45-41 points
The background and significance of the problem and a clear statement of the research purpose is provided. The search history is mentioned.
Literature Support
91-84 points
The background and significance of the problem and a clear statement of the research purpose is provided. The search history is mentioned.
Methodology
58-53 points
Content is well-organized with headings for each slide and bulleted lists to group related material as needed. Use of font, color, graphics, effects, etc. to enhance readability and presentation content is excellent. Length requirements of 10 slides/pages or less is met.
Average Score
50-85%
40-38 points
More depth/detail for the background and significance is needed, or the research detail is not clear. No search history information is provided.
83-76 points
Review of relevant theoretical literature is evident, but there is little integration of studies into concepts related to problem. Review is partially focused and organized. Supporting and opposing research are included. Summary of information presented is included. Conclusion may not contain a biblical integration.
52-49 points
Content is somewhat organized, but no structure is apparent. The use of font, color, graphics, effects, etc. is occasionally detracting to the presentation content. Length requirements may not be met.
Poor Quality
0-45%
37-1 points
The background and/or significance are missing. No search history information is provided.
75-1 points
Review of relevant theoretical literature is evident, but there is no integration of studies into concepts related to problem. Review is partially focused and organized. Supporting and opposing research are not included in the summary of information presented. Conclusion does not contain a biblical integration.
48-1 points
There is no clear or logical organizational structure. No logical sequence is apparent. The use of font, color, graphics, effects etc. is often detracting to the presentation content. Length requirements may not be met
