Fiction Essay Discussion Assignment
Description
The prompt I chose to reply to is the following:
Many of our readings call attention to binary oppositions that are often presumed to be self-evident and universal (ex: male/female, insiders/outsiders, good/evil, natural/unnatural, civilized/primitive). Pick a text that engages with one such binary, and write a paper that discusses to what degree the text challenges or supports the stability of this binary. Make sure you identify how you are defining each end of the binary.
The story I am planning to use is “The Yellow Wallpaper.”
Things to consider:
Identify one or two problems, themes, or points of interest that the text raises. Why do you think these are important to your specific interpretation of the text? How do they lead you to interpretations that you couldn’t otherwise make without highlighting these problems, themes, or points of interest?
– What key passages will be important to support your argument? Why have you selected them?
– What aspects of the text do they illustrate? Be sure that your argument is well-supported by specific passages in the text.
– Explain how the part(s) you’ve focused on relate to a particular text as a whole. How does looking at certain literary devices such as setting, plot, or point of view, for example, help provide a new angle on reading the text?
– Explain why your analysis matters. What does your interpretation offer to understanding the broader significance of the text?
