Final Assignment: Introduction to Philosophy
Two of the five questions below must be answered. The length of each response should be between 600 and 800 words.
The deadline for the assignment is May 20th. Please send me a world-file via email. Please sign the enclosed word document with your name.
Within the word limit, answer two of these questions as clearly, exactly, and completely as possible. It is critical that you show direct engagement with the materials we have read in order to do well on this project. While you should not quote extensively (though short excerpts are acceptable), your response should not be divorced from the substance of the arguments made in the materials we’ve read. The grades for assignments that do not demonstrate direct connection with the texts will be quite low.
Because we’re all at home, there’s a greater temptation to cheat by consulting Wikipedia or other online resources. Here’s what I’d say to you: Dont. To put it bluntly, don’t bother with secondary sources. I’m well aware of the issue, and I’ll be scrutinizing your projects in a variety of ways to see whether they contain information that isn’t your own. If they do, not only will you fail the assignment, but you will also fail the course. As a result, don’t do it.
1. What is a person for Frankfurt? What, according to Frankfurt, is the relationship between personhood and the freedom of the will? Tell me how the kleptomaniac (or unwilling addict) differs from the wanton and how they relate to the question of who is a person.
2. Existentialism is defined by Sartre’s statement that “existence precedes essence.” Tell me what this term means to Sartre after you’ve described the position he’s criticizing (where essence comes before existence). What does this have to do with his definition of freedom?
3. Define and explain what the terms “female,” “woman,” and “femininity” mean to de Beauvoir. What role does her grasp of these concepts play in her explanation of freedom (autonomy)?
4. Compare and contrast De Beauvoir and Sartre’s similarities and differences.
5. Hayek contends that liberty and freedom should not be equated with power. Explain to me why he thinks this after you’ve explained his idea of freedom. What is his justification for coming to this conclusion?v
