Final Research Paper Rough Draft
Description
Write a rough draft of the paper using the chosen topic, which should be at least 3-4 pages long.
(The chosen topic can be found in the files section.)
The following are the guidelines for the final paper:
(You’re writing a rough draft, but these are the instructions for the final paper, so you’ll know what to include in the draft.)
You will conduct research (see below) and then write a thesis-driven paper for your final paper (that is, not just a report on X, but a paper that argues for some claim or position). You must back up your claim with evidence gathered during your investigation. Your topic should be related to linguistics in some way. Below is a list of some of the topics that students looked into.
Secondary and/or primary sources are acceptable sources for this paper. If you want to, you can conduct original research using primary sources, but you are not required to do so. Even if you’re conducting original research, you should start with secondary sources to get a sense of what’s already known about your subject. In any case, you must use trustworthy and appropriate sources, and secondary sources should be scholarly when possible (keeping in mind that some excellent sources are not scholarly, and sometimes there are no scholarly sources on a particular topic). Please contact me if you have any questions about your sources.
Your paper should be 8-10 pages long (double-spaced), not including your works cited or references page and/or any appendices (the draft is 3-4 pages long). You can use either MLA or APA citation styles, but make sure you use them correctly.
The paper will be graded based on how well it demonstrates your ability to:
The writer has demonstrated the ability to develop a specific thesis, purpose, and/or focus for the given purpose, audience, and genre that analyzes, argues, synthesizes, speculates, evaluates, and/or reflects (rather than simply reporting or summarizing).
For the given purpose, audience, and genre, the writer has chosen and implemented effective organizational strategies at the sentence, paragraph, and global levels.
The writer has used an appropriate amount of direct quotation, paraphrasing, and summarizing for the given purpose, audience, and genre.
For the given purpose, audience, and genre, the writer has effectively analyzed, interpreted, and/or elaborated on the evidence.
The writer has used appropriate citation and documentation in a consistent and correct manner (for example, MLA or APA).
The author has chosen a register and used language that is appropriate for the genre, audience, purpose, and context.
