Habermas’s account of the rise and fall of the liberal bourgeoise public sphere has been central in intellectual debates about the public sphere. (1) Describe Habermas’s concept of the public sphere, identifying and explaining at least four defining characteristics. Then (2), drawing on arguments made in the course readings as well as your own perspective, describe some of the limitations of Habermas’s concept. Finally (3), explain how you think Habermas’s concept of the public sphere can be useful and/or not for understanding, critiquing, and/or improving our contemporary democratic society.
