Fundamental Economic Arguments discussion questions
You must produce a longer essay of around fifteen pages for this assignment (double-spaced). You can mostly rely on class readings, but it’s fine if you want to look out information elsewhere. Please avoid
using footnotes and instead include a bibliography.
Outline the main ideas of two of the three big theories we’ve examined in this class: Adam Smith, Karl Marx, and Douglass North in the first section of the essay. Apply the reasons of these theories to two
areas or countries from various places or times to explain their economic evolution dynamics in the second section of the essay. Changes in property rights and corresponding shifts in inequality, changes in
state policies and institutions, changes in technology, changes in trade patterns, and changes in the basic resources available for production are all issues to examine. Use your analysis in the third section of
the essay to determine which hypothesis best explains the economic trends you’ve examined.
