Instructions:
Garden Decks of Beauty’s project manager
Congratulations!!
You’ve been hired as the new project manager at Garden Decks of Beauty, a Lexington, Kentucky-based company for the past 12 years. The Melrose family (Todd and Margo Plus two yippy dogs to drive the neighbors crazy) moved into their new house two years ago and now want to replace the 8 foot by 3 foot concrete stoop that their rear facing French Doors open onto with a new, opulent deck area with hot tub and amenities. Their backyard is 80′ wide by 120′ deep, with a 5% incline straight down to the rear. Todd and Margo, by the way, are Iron Triangle devotees Time, Cost, and Quality. If you win them, you’ll also gain the business of their neighbors.
Some of their basic needs are as follows:
A two-level deck with the upper level (which you will enter through the French Doors) being a 5 meter by 7 meter rectangular area One end of the upper level will have a 5 meter by 3 meter by 3.5 meter tall pergola you may use a kit or build and design from scratch A single step down to the second circular area, which will be 7 meters in diameter and have a 2.5 meter square hot-tub on the ground level
Halfway down the path, there will be a 25′ diameter area with a built-in fire pit and seating (4 seats / benches) the area will be edged with decorative railing The deck framing will be set on 4″x4″ footers that will be concreted 1 meter into the ground (below frost line) galvanized hangers will be used to support frame supports
You’ll need a building permit, which will set you back $50.
Decorative lighting will run the length of every handrail.
Plants, decorative stones, perennials, and bushes will be planted along the perimeter of both main deck spaces. Your crew will take care of the landscaping You will have a construction team of four full-time employees (FTEs) who will be paid $80 per hour plus benefits and 1.5 times overtime.
You’ll have a crew of two skilled landscapers who will charge $75 per hour plus extra.
Need a few of 110 volt exterior outlets for Christmas lights, etc. You’ll need electrical, which you’ll contract out – figure out how much it’ll cost.
The deck will be fully sealed with a medium brown stain / preservative You will use treated lumber for all framing and will decide on what product to use for surface boards You will vendor out the hot-tub installation determine cost You will need a vendor to install and run the gas-line determine cost You will use treated lumber for all framing and will decide on what product to use for surface boards (wood, synthetic, etc.)
There will be two built-in seats near the grill area (wood) on the upper level, but not beneath the pergola.
You’ll need to figure out a timeline this will come from the Work Breakdown Structure.
Assume you have all of the tools you’ll need. Any needs that aren’t explicitly stated are up to you.
A 5 foot by 12 foot 2×8 raised bed tomato and pepper area just to the left of where you may walk off the center of the upper deck, with drip irrigation installed and a drip irrigation tap in one corner.
Please see the list below for the documents that will be prepared for the project. It is critical that you all contribute in some way to the creation of each of the documents listed below as a team. That you will know what that document is for and what it usually contains when you finish this course. You’ll need to work together to create all of the papers, which you’ll need to construct slides for your project status presentation on Sunday morning using Power Point.

What’s the best way for me to handle this?
The internet is your best buddy – use it! Deck construction basics hot tubs for sale and installation how to pick a gas grill running a gas line to my grill landscape planning all kinds of project related searches estimating construction labor costs any places like Lowes for all of your basic materials cost building an in-yard fire-pit, procurement and contract basics building a deck flower box Wayfair
I understand: -That many of you believe I have no construction, deck-building, or landscaping experience. What you must understand is that when looking for work as a project manager, you will always be faced with the question of how much do I really need to know about the field of work in which the project is located (telecom, IT, construction, travel, human resources, insurance, health care, finance, and so on) in order to be effective at my job. There will be possible employers who believe you need to know a lot. You’ll encounter people like myself who will tell you that’s not the case. What you must be prepared to do is study / absorb as much project work knowledge as possible as soon as feasible. Prepare to investigate all of your alternatives in order to acquire and locate the information you require to perform properly. You’ll need just enough vocabulary and understanding to get by and communicate effectively, and that will grow as the project progresses. This is one of the things that makes project management so enjoyable: it is never the same and never boring.
