Description of the question
In 400 words or less
INITIAL OBSERVATIONS AND HYPOTHESIS (PART 1) (10 pts)Begin by making some preliminary observations on the western boundary of the South America plate, and then develop a hypothesis about what is happening along this plate boundary based on your findings.
Examine the graphic of South America on the first page of the overview document (see the Overview module above) and make notes about the topography along the western border of the continent. Explain the topography in
relation to the red plate boundary in your observations. Fill out the following form with your observations (each observation is worth 6 points):
As the lithosphere pushes together, pulls apart, or slides past one another, the movement of the Earth’s tectonic plates forms faults and triggers earthquakes. There are earthquakes connected with the movement of all plate
borders. The rocks will often break and grind together as the action happens, sending energy vibrations into the ground. Earthquakes on plate borders can happen close to the surface or deep underground. The technology used to detect earthquakes can pinpoint the exact location of the plate boundary beneath the surface. Two earth bricks are moving against each other in the image on the right. The center of an earthquake is the location where the rocks
actually break during a single event. The epicenter is the point on the earth’s surface that is directly above the focus.
Based on the information above and your initial topography observations. Write a hypothesis regarding the type of plate boundary you expect for the South America plate’s western boundary. State the pattern of earthquakes youexpect to see for this type of plate boundary in your hypothesis. Remember that a hypothesis must be able to be tested to see if it is correct or not. In the document supplied, write your hypothesis (Hypothesis is worth 4 pts)
Please finish by 11:30 a.m. central.
