constructingwhiteness (1).pdf
Critical Analysis Paper will address and explain from a historical and contemporary society the social construction of Whiteness as explained by the author. One perspective suggests that the social construction of Whiteness serves as a site where societal inequalities such as racism, sexism, economic stratification, and other forms of oppression are reproduced. Throughout the history of the United States many individuals, Black and White alike, have critically reflected upon this arrangement and courageously engaged in actions to promote social justice within and beyond the perceived meaning behind the social construction of race and the social construction of Whiteness.
Here are some Guiding Questions for you. No, you do not have to answer or explain each question. Use a critical lens when applicable.
1) Is Whiteness a societal and institutional phenomenon, or a personal, individual mindset? Perhaps both?
Are there any examples of white privilege being institutional or interpersonal?
2) What is White privilege? How can it be applied to race in the U.S.?
Who has it?
Who does not?
How can people with White privilege affect society in ways people without privilege cannot?
3) Name some examples where some people, based on social construction of Whiteness, receive certain advantages – either unconsciously or consciously, and/or, that people of color do not receive.
4) What are some of the costs of racism for the social construction of Whiteness and/or white people?
Why should white people work to address white privilege?
And most importantly, how can all people work collectively to address issues of race and privilege?
