Consider this: Among modern democratic political systems, the United States has one of the lowest voter turnout rates. Many initiatives to increase voter participation have been implemented over the last decade, but concerns about election fraud have also grown. Furthermore, some political interests perceive an increase in turnout among some traditionally low-turnout ethnic minorities as a threat to their interests. Several states have recently passed legislation requiring new forms of identification and registration. This has sparked debate over whether these tactics are intended to reduce voter turnout or prevent fraud. Consider the role of the media in the election process, as well as how both traditional and social media can influence the outcome. What role has the media played in recent years, particularly in light of President Trump’s stance on “fake news”?
In your first post, write:
Describe the voter identification laws in a state of your choice. Summarize any recent developments or controversies in the state’s voter identification laws.
Analyze and explain the benefits and drawbacks of both sides of the debate over these laws.
Is voter fraud a major issue for our democracy, or are some groups attempting to make voting more difficult for certain groups of people?
Examine the role of the media (both traditional and social) in influencing public opinion, particularly in regards to voter ID laws.
How did voter laws and the media influence the 2016 Trump/Clinton election?
This page summarizes some of the state-by-state differences in voter identification laws: Laws & Requirements Concerning Voting: Methods and Options for Voting
