Unit 1 Discussion – Introduction and Effective Communication
Application of Knowledge from the Course
I am Ericka Watson-Polk, a registered nurse employed in New Orleans at the Department of Veteran Affairs. I am a lead registered nurse in outpatient clinics. I have been a nurse since 2001. I obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Education, and I hold an Associate’s Degree in Nursing. After years of procrastinating, I decided to return and reach my goal of obtaining my BSN, and with this course, I am one step closer.
Nurses play a great role in the improvement of health standards offered to their clients. Taking part in this course is motivated by a belief that, in the end, it will help sharpen and develop key skills in my field of work. As a nurse, I intend to utilize the knowledge garnered to develop more formidable relationships with patients and co-workers. Health care centers employ more nurses for their ability to provide compassionate and empathetic care to patients during recovery (Kourkouta & Papathanasiou, 2014). Grasp on effective communication will help sponsor improved patients outcomes through quality, individualized care for each patient (Kourkouta & Papathanasiou, 2014). More so, I intend to improve my management and decision-making skills to guarantee continuous improvement in healthcare quality and patients safety.
Elements of Effective Communication and Therapeutic Relationship in Nursing
Effective communication is one of the essential components in quality healthcare delivery (Ratna, 2019). Without effective communication, nursing care quality would be compromised, translating to poor patient outcomes (Kourkouta & Papathanasiou, 2014). There are multiple elements critical in the development of effective communication in nursing care. Three of those elements include healthcare literacy, cultural competency, and emotional intelligence (Ratna, 2019).
Healthcare communication is bidirectional. For effective communication, health literacy should prevail among patients and healthcare providers. Patients have to explain their health status to their nurses (Ratna, 2019). Nurses competence in information interpretation is key to ensure proper treatment of patients complaints (Ratna, 2019). In the Orthopedic Ambulatory Specialty Clinic, patients’ feedback during diagnosis of the bone injury is essential. It helps a nurse understand the extent of the injury and its impact on the patient’s wellbeing. Cultural competence dispels a nurse’s ability to eliminate racial or ethnic differences during healthcare provision (Ratna, 2019). For instance, in the Orthopedic Ambulatory Specialty Clinic that I work in, people emanate from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds. For effective communication, zero discrimination has to prevail.
Last, emotional intelligence is a valuable asset for effective communication during nursing care. Emotional intelligence involves keeping negative emotions in check and treating patients with compassion and empathy (Ratna, 2019). In an Orthopedic Ambulatory Specialty Clinic, most people struggle before full recovery. During that period, patients are more at ease sharing their struggles with empathetic and compassionate nurses.References

Hello everyone,
Your name and a description of your current position
My Name is David Salazar. Currently, I work as a traveling nurse in the state of Wisconsin. I also hold an as-needed position at a local hospital. My specialty is cardiac, but I have been working a lot of Medical-Surgical lately. How do you see yourself applying knowledge from this course?
I will use this course to further my communication skills. I would like to be able to communicate more effectively with clients, families, healthcare teams, and communities. One item that I find interesting is that currently, we do not have many patient visitors due to COVID-19 restrictions. As the country starts to open, visitor restrictions will be reduced and boom, more visitors! I could see myself being rusty in my communication with family members at the bedside. Additionally, communication with the health care team is important to master. I look forward to learning more about the inherent values of altruism, autonomy, human dignity, integrity, social justice, and their applications.
Describe elements essential to establishing effective communication and a therapeutic relationship, which you have integrated into your role as a nurse.
Good communication between the nurse, patients, family members, and the members of the care team is essential for good patient outcomes. To achieve this, nurses must understand and help their patients, and others by practicing and demonstrating courtesy, kindness, and sincerity (Kourkouta, 2014). Kourkouta (2019) reminds us that the nurse, who wants to create the right relationship with the patient, must-win him/her from the first moment. This will happen if the conversation is held in appropriate conditions. Even though it seems obvious, it should be noted that courtesy and kindness on part of the nurse are required. In doing so, we begin to establish a therapeutic relationship, in which healing can occur.
Provide an example from your current practice environment.
Recently, I was the primary nurse for a pediatric patient and his family. The child was difficult to work with at times due to behavioral issues and special accommodations had to be made to provide effective care. Initial interactions with the family and the patient were crucial. I was courteous, friendly, and understanding of the situation. I introduced myself, took the time to answer questions, and establish a rapport with all parties. This attending pediatrician made herself available at all hours and encouraged me to call for any assistance. I took advantage of that! Additionally, I communicated the wishes of both the family/ patient and the provider to the rest of the care team.

Hello class
My name is Kimberly Triplett, and I am a travel nurse working on the medical-surgical telemetry unit. I have been a nurse for 20 plus years. I am on a 13-week assignment. The patients I care for include various medical, surgical, cardiac, and covid positive patients.
As I navigate this class, I hope to piece all that I have learned in this Bachelor of Science in Nursing program and use it in a management position
As a registered nurse having effective communication with my patients gives patients a chance to be a part of their care. I always try to gain a rapport with my patients, be honest, and include them in their care plan if possible. Many patients feel like they have no control over their care; including them in their care for the day gives them a sense of control can improve their quality of care and improve patient satisfaction (Afriyie,2020). The same goes for the family or caregiver. Family members can be a great help with encouraging patients to reach their ultimate potential. There have been many times I would educate the caregiver to allow the patient to feed themselves or even let the patient wash their face. Also, caregivers are needed to assist with peg tube feedings or even change the patient’s dressings as we prepare the patient to go home.
The shortage of staff plays such a huge part in effective communication with patients and families. Working on the covid units is very hard for patients to have some sense of independence. I have done my best to return calls to family members or even dial the phone for elderly patients so their children can talk to them. Being able to help the family communicate can improve their quality of care and even help give them a sense of hope.
