Description
Prompt: Thoroughly research a local organization engaged in a social/political issue and analyze the ways in which the group enacts a value.
Project Description: As we have seen throughout this semester, we all have values and beliefs that motivate our actions. In the previous unit, you explored the worldview of someone who disagrees with you on a social or political issue; in this unit, you will shift from exploring what motivates individuals to what motivates groups. You will study an organization to discover how their social/political efforts enact a shared value. To begin, you will research a local group that you have never been a member of but may be interested in joining. You may want to choose a group that has an open meeting or event taking place within the next two weeks. Using primary and secondary research, you will analyze the groups actions and artifacts to identify a meaningful value that the group holds in common and to reveal how their shared value is defined and enacted.
Learning and Writing Goals: To accomplish the goals of this assignment, you will learn to engage in primary research (textual analysis, observations, interviews) where relevant to enhance your understanding of the group. Building on the research skills you developed in the previous unit, you will also do secondary research to help you provide contextual information about the group and the social or political issue. Your essay should include detailed analysis of the groups actions and the ways in which those actions demonstrate a meaningful, shared value. Be specific and use nuance in defining your groups value, just as you did in your first essay. For example, all charities have service as a value. To get beyond this generic term and identify a value more unique to them, consider whom they serve (or dont serve), what services they provide, and where their money comes from. Questions like these will help you to define what “service” means to them or what other value might be driving that service, such as compassionate justice. Like the first two assignments, this essay has no prescribed organization, so you should choose a structure tailored to your research and analysis.
Requirements: A successful essay will:
Analyze a local group that is new to you, meaning that you cannot be counted as one of its members
Be informative, detailed, and well-researched
Use textual analysis and other forms of primary research to demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the connection between the groups shared value and the way it is put into action
Draw on secondary research as needed to provide background information about the group and/or the complexity of the social or political issue
Move beyond surface-level observations to demonstrate a nuanced understanding of your subject matter
Cite all sources in MLA style
Be 1750-2000 words in length
Be clear, effectively organized, and carefully edited
