Breaking Through
In the world we live in, us women have the most pressure to look a certain way in order to be accepted into the world and if we choose to deter from those
standards we are considered “less attractive” when in reality, we are going with what brings us the most content. With me being a woman, I understand the burden
of image, being constantly surrounded by images of airbrushed women and men telling us that’s how we should look and for years we shook our heads and
quietly killed ourselves to please them until, we decided being quiet wasn’t our forte. It’s a new age and with a new age comes new standards and new ways of
thinking with no negotiations or regrets which is flawlessly demonstrated in the Dior advertisement below.
The advertisement exalts Diors representation women being controlled and trying to break free to form their own independence by having a picture of a woman
trying to break free from a man holding her back. In this photo you can’t help but notice how it has a slight fade from dark to light with the man on the darker side.
The man is holding her arm in a rather firm manner, his body is turned slightly towards her and slightly the other way, suggesting he’s trying to get her to come
with him. His face is squinted suggesting he doesn’t like that she is trying to leave and is desperately trying to get her back. Then taking a look at the woman, she
is trying to run to the brighter side of the picture, the look of desperation and slight relief on her face. With one had she is slightly gripping the man’s arm as if
she’s a little nervous about going off on her own, but with the other hand she and her Dior bag are reaching for the light with an open palm welcoming it in. Her
body looks as if she’s trying to run but is being held back but the second he lets her go she’s going to sprint towards the light, her hair is a mess like it was pinned
up into a nice hair style but with her putting up a hard fight, representing how hard she’s fighting to escape.
Dior has revolutionized advertisement by encouraging women to finally break free and become who they were meant to be. He is using his platform to spread a
bigger message, and spread awareness to an ongoing issue that is finally starting to see development. The picture shows that women can break away from the
problems that seem to have a strong hold.
