Description
You are the Assistant Director of Campus Activities at New England State University, a comprehensive state institution in rural New England with 9,000 students. Your campus serves many first generation college students and members of the military, as you are located in the same small city as an Army base. Part of your professional duties requires you to co-advise 50 student organizations; your co-advisors of these organizations are made up of various members of the faculty and staff on campus. Your job as co-advisor is to help the organizations plan large activities, stay within their budgets, and train new organization leaders on campus policies and procedures.
On Monday morning, you receive an email from the Director of the GLBT Center on campus, asking you why you have allowed the Campus Republicans to host a famous speaker who is known for his public anti-gay rhetoric. In the email, the Director tells you she found out about the speaker when a very upset student brought a flyer to her office. She requests a meeting with you and your Director that day. The event is scheduled for the Thursday of this week and this is the first you have heard about it. As you begin to investigate the event, you learn that it has been advertised on campus and in the local community paper; it is being co-sponsored by a local conservative organization not affiliated with the college.
What do you do? With whom will you meet/collaborate? Can you/should you cancel the event? What are your other options? Which student development theories will help in your decision making process as you work with the student groups involved?
