Description

CHAPTER AND TEXTS
While Hughes is most often remembered for his poetry, he wrote a number of texts across other generes, including fiction, drama, and non-fiction, many of which are more than worth reading. One of my favorites LET AMERICA BE AMERICA AGAIN.
This whole poem is a crying out, a passionate plea for America to re-establish the Dream. It is a kind of personal hymn, a lyrical speech, to freedom and equality. To enable that plea to be heard and felt, the speaker has to take the reader through some dark times, through history, to explain just why that Dream needs to live again.

CHAPTER CONTENT: LET AMERICA BE AMERICA AGAIN by LANGSTON HUGHES
Except for the required analysis of a text that includes question the analysis will attempt to answer and tentative thesis , my chapter will also contain a summary of text , images, glossary , and critical thinking questions.
QUESTIONS THE ANALYSIS WILL ATTEMPT TO ANSWER :
1.What is the author saying about the American Dream?
2.What do you think is Hughes purpose for writting this poem?
3.which rhetorical devices does Hughes use to communicate the theme?
Tentative Thesis
“Hughes’ portrayal of the American dream is that it is unattainable for some and that the notion of ‘liberty and justice for all’ has never been a reality.”
Summary
I will briefly summarize the poem to give the audience a better understanding about the analysis, to be able to answer the critical questions and to better collate the poem with images I will be providing.
Images
This image clearly shows how people used to protest for freedom, wanting to be heard.
In this image , the young man, full of strength and hope this image creates empathy to the audience showing how sad, lack of freedom they were.
Glossary
Mumble: talk indistinctly, usually in a low voice.
Clutch: hold firmly, usually with ones hand.
Bondsman:a male slave.
Foundry: a factory where metal castings are produced.
Critical Thinking Questions
1.If you had to summarize the poem in only a few sentences to someone who had never read it before, what would you say? What would be the main takeaway that you would want them to walk away with?
2. What is the tone of this poem? Looking back at what Hughes wrote, what are a few lines that support your claim? How does the tone change from the beginning of the poem to the end?
3. Summarize the last stanza in your own words. Do you find the tone at the end of the poem hopeful? Why or why not?
