Thesis: The topic of my essay will cover how Carbon Monoxide scrubbers on ships affect P&I and Hull and Machinery.
(1.) Intro: MAIN POINTS
● Explanation of IMO 2020, its impact on the shipping industry, in respect to emissions
● Explanation of how CO2 scrubbers work.
● Positives and negatives of a CO2 scrubber on a ship.
● Explain how chartering companies and small shipping companies use CO2 scrubbers to comply with IMO 2020 and why they are attracted to use them (it’s a lot cheaper)
● How planned conversions will impact marine insurance rates. Will they rise/fall based on present to future market trends?
(2.) Body 1: P&I (break up into multiple sections)
● Explanation of what P&I is and the coverage that applies (necessary repairs)
● Explanation on what happens if a CO2 scrubber fails
● Explain requirements that are laid out if a CO2 scrubber fails (go through procedure)
● Explain how P&I would be affected if rules and regulations are/aren’t followed
(3.) Body 2: Hull and Machinery (break up into multiple sections)
● Will include an explanation of what Hull and Machinery is and the coverage it provides
– Will include an explanation of the possible incidents/damages (peril of the seas) that can cause damage to a CO2 scrubber
– How due diligence comes into play if damage occurs to a scrubber
– Explain how Hull & Machinery would be affected if rules and regulations are/aren’t followed
(4) Conclusion:
– Will conclude how CO2 scrubbers will impact Marine Insurance rates.
