Medical Technology for Longevity in Public Health
In 1900, the average life expectancy (LE) was 47 years. The average LE in the United States was 80 years in 2008, and the US Census Bureau presently predicts that it will be 79.5 years in 2019. In the United States, life expectancy varies by gender and race. Whites live around 4 years longer than African-Americans, while women live about 5 years longer than men.
At the population level, two significant technological variables have been linked to increased life expectancy. Vaccinations and water purification have increased our life expectancy by 25-30 years, while medical breakthroughs have increased our life expectancy by around 5 years. These steps have considerably reduced infant mortality, allowing people to live longer and healthier lives far into their 70s, 80s, and beyond. (For more information, see https://www.census.gov/prod/1/pop/p23-190/p23190-g.pdf.)
Part 1: Complete the online survey below: http://www.livingto100.com/calculator/age
Take note of the survey’s questions and think about the things that could affect your longevity. (NOTE: Because the calculator is routinely updated to account for new study findings, you will be asked to give an email address and create a password as part of the survey.) If you have strong feelings about giving out your email address, you can create a dummy account using a free email service or ask the instructor for a different writing assignment.)
Part 2: Genetic and environmental factors help predict how long a person will live at the individual level. Review the learning resources for this week’s discussion subject.
Fill in the blanks with your answers to the following questions:
Share your survey findings – how long do you think you’ll live? What factors influenced your life expectancy (or lack thereof)?
What are the economic, sociological, psychological, and healthcare ramifications of an aging population with an unlimited life expectancy?
What impact does technology have in people’s health throughout their lives? What is it that prevents us from being healthy? What role does it play in promoting health?
What do you believe our life expectancy should be? Should we be able to live endlessly or should there be some sort of limit? Justify your answer.
