MGMT 615: Managing Multicultural Teams
Consider yourself a management consultant hired to learn about the challenges and best practices of managing cross-cultural teams. You’d start by making sure you have the knowledge you needed for this situation: individual motivation, teamwork, cultural values, and individual/age cohort values. Because multi-cultural teamwork is scattered around the world, it’s critical to understand how external influences and organizational structure influence it. Finally, a company’s internal systems and methods for getting work done include multi-cultural teamsthe learning organization model illustrates systems thinking.
Read the items in the course content area for weeks 4 and 5. Then read these two articles by Michelle LeBaron, which discuss the impact of cultural values on a person’s behavior in great detail:

2. View Ricardo Fernandez’s TEDx talk on managing cross-cultural virtual teams:

3) Respond to the following in a 500-word initial posting (by Tuesday at midnight EST):
Explain the elements that influence Fernandez and his team members’ behaviour (e.g., cultural values, age cohort, etc.don’t limit yourself to these). When explaining these elements, use examples from his talk to illustrate your ideas.
We looked at the external forces that affect an organization earlier in the course and how they affect the internal organization. Discuss this in relation to Fernandez’s current location as well as the known whereabouts of his teammates. What impact does this have on their capacity to function as a team?
With this in mind, what relationship and communication abilities do you believe are currently required to manage cross-cultural virtual teams?
