Miss Sunita Patel Contact lens hypersensitivity Case study
Miss Sunita Patel is a 24-year-old law student who attends the ophthalmic outpatient clinic saying that she has had bilateral red eyes and ocular discomfort for the previous two days. She has been wearing soft contact lenses for the past three years. She is studying for her final year written examination.
While studying, she has neglected her contact lens eye care. She ran out of contact lens cleaning solution and used her friends (Julies) solution to clean her lenses. Soon after inserting her
lenses, she experienced severe discomfort, watery eyes and photophobia. Her vision has been reduced and she describes it as misty.
When she comes to the clinic, she is still wearing her contact lenses in both eyes. She is accompanied by Julie. Sunita is myopic and has a pair of glasses, which she has not used for the past
four months. Her health is otherwise good and she takes contraceptive pills.
She appears very distressed. The ophthalmologist attends to Sunita as a priority case, and a diagnosis of hypersensitivity reaction to contact lens solution is made. The doctor also notes asmall infective left corneal ulcer. Antibiotic eye drops and cycloplegics are prescribed. She is to stop wearing contact lenses until both eyes have settled. She is to be reviewed in two days time in the corneal clinic.
