Winning at Work: Does Multitasking Help Me Be More Productive?
College students are used to multitasking with technology, despite the fact that a majority of students believe multitasking while studying is a bad technique. Multitasking at work has been linked to reduced productivity, according to studies. Researchers estimate that only 2.5 percent of people can multitask efficiently, despite the fact that many people believe they can. Because electronic devices are addictive, you must make a firm decision to cease multitasking. To give your brain a break from electronic media, set out time each day to disengage from it, and don’t consider time spent alone thinking to be wasted. To resist the impulse to multitask, practice mindfulness; don’t use your devices within 60 minutes of going to bed; and don’t text and drive. Finally, set ground rules for utilizing electronic devices in team meetings and when studying.
Topics/questions for discussion:
Do you think you’re one of the 2.5 percent of individuals who can multitask efficiently, according to research? Justify your stance.
What would you do if you were working on a difficult assignment and one of your coworkers asked you to take care of something else right away?
Do you think you spend more time multitasking for personal or professional responsibilities? Is there a difference in how effective you are at multitasking in different areas of your life?
