MUS 1104 Music Appreciation Assignment Instructions
Traditionally, this assignment would require attending a live concert. Because this is not currently possible, I have curated a YouTube playlist (above) for you. Be sure to listen to each performance in its entirety (there are 5 selections total). You should address each selection in your report.
Please plan ahead for this assignment, as it will take longer to complete than the previous Standard Assignments.
Your Assignment
- What kind of listener were you at the concert? Why?
- What pieces were performed?
- What was the style of each of the pieces performed?
- What was the instrumentation of the orchestra?
- Draw out the seating arrangement of the instruments in the orchestra.
Additionally, you may use the following questions for guidance as you listen to the selections and complete the assignment:
Which selections did I enjoy the most?
Which selections challenged me?
How did the performers interact on stage?
What were the performers’ roles? (i.e., was there a conductor? Soloist? Accompanist?)
What concepts from MUS 1104 did I notice in the music?
If I were to attend a live concert, would I seek out any of these particular genres?
What are some concerts I’ve been to in the past that are similar?
Type of listeners:
- Casual listener
- Critical listener
- Referential listener
- Perceptive listener
