this is the first opportunity to turn in your research proposal. Here, it is a near-final draft. What does “near-final” mean? It means a completed and professional research proposal, one that you would normally turn in at the end of the semester. It is NOT: some ideas on paper, a rough outline of your proposal, a first draft of your proposal; it IS a near-final, near-perfect copy of your proposal, turned in as a Word doc. (x.doc)
This draft will account for approximately 1/3 of your research proposal grade. I will grade it and return it to you with comments. You will then turn in a FINAL proposal and I will grade only those portions that needed improvement. The final proposal will account for approximately 2/3 of your overall research proposal grade. So the research proposal is worth 100 points; the near-final will be worth 33 and the final will be worth about 67 points.
Here are the technical requirements for your research proposal:
They must be in APA format. What does that mean? Proper citing of sources in-text and on the reference page; proper title page; an abstract on its own page; 12-point font and more – see the APA Style guide or online sources for assistance.
The requirement is for a minimum 10-page paper including from the title page through the works cited, but not the appendices. From my experience, unless you are a very gifted writer, you cannot cover the appropriate material in less than 10 pages.
A minimum of five sources, in addition to any textbook cites, must be provided. Three of the sources must be peer-reviewed articles.
The proposal must be on a topic approved by your professor.
Only quantitative proposals are accepted.
The proposal must contain the use of a student-developed survey for the research.
Turnitin, a plagiarism application, will be turned on for this assignment. So, the professor, and you will receive an analysis of duplication with other papers submitted on this topic. Research proposals found to contain significant plagiarism will not be graded, a zero will be given for the assignment.
Suggested outline: You must follow the research proposal outline we will use in class all semester. To review it go to Week 3 in Webcourses where it was first discussed. And, the group assignments have great samples!!
A statement that specifically defines the purpose of your research is needed. (I’ll be looking for those words). We have spoken about four research methods so far, here are four examples of purpose statements:
The purpose of this quantitative descriptive research is to describe student attitudes toward the UCF faculty. (Descriptive)
The purpose of this quantitative correlational research is to determine if there is a relationship between student motivation and faculty excellence. (correlational)
The purpose of this quantitative quasi-experimental research is to determine if there is a difference in student motivation between those taking a course with early faculty and those taking a course with experienced faculty. (quasi-experimental)
The purpose of this quantitative experimental research is to determine if there is a difference in student motivation between students using Textbook A and those using Textbook B. (experimental)
State your research question(s) and or a hypothesis
Identify and define the variables – identify an independent and dependent variable if you have it.
State any limitations if you notice them – a limitation is something that might effect the validity of the study – remember internal validity? If you are using a convenience sample, for example, that would be a limitation because you do not know if the sample is representative of the population
