SW550 Childhood Abuse Discussion
For this assignment you are asked to view the Ted Talk, From Victim to Survivor: Find you X…but First, Find Your Why. In this video you will see a real-life story of someone who experienced child sexual abuse. You need to gather the pertinent information from this story in regards to the dynamics, indicators, characteristics, effects, etc. of child sexual abuse. Feel free to use the worksheet provided to help you take notes while watching to keep track of all the information needed for the written assignment.
Please include the following in an essay-style paper that is 3-4 pages in length. Papers should include an introduction and conclusion paragraph. Papers need to be formatted according to APA publication guidelines (6th edition). This includes a title page (not included in the length of the paper), page numbers, proper formatting, citations, and a reference page (not included in the length of the paper). Please see the professor if you are unfamiliar with APA style.
All written work is expected to be 12-point font and double spaced with 1” margins on all sides.
You are expected to submit papers free of grammatical and spelling errors, and to use citations when appropriate.
You should strive to write with clarity, and support your ideas and assertions with sound, informed reasoning. The ability to explain your ideas is absolutely essential for sound social work practice. Proofread your work prior to the submission of any assignments. While spell-check and grammar-check can be useful, they are not sufficient! Papers will be graded for writing quality (including spelling and grammar), organization and coherence of the construction of your analysis, and evidence of critical thinking. Grades will be lowered for work submitted not in accordance with these guidelines.
Discuss each of the five sections below:
Victim-look for any indicators, dynamics, short and long-term effects of sexual abuse
Non-offending caregiver(s)- look for dynamics, indicators, and emotions experienced, etc.
Perpetrators- look for any common things the perpetrators used to groom victims, dynamics, etc.
Family-look for dynamics or indicators that were present within this family.
Phases-Based on the video, discuss the dynamics and indicators of the five phases of sexual abuse as the victim describes the events.
If some of these topics were not specifically mentioned, what are some options of how they could have looked within this case? You never want to make assumptions in casework, but for the purpose of this assignment it is expected that you can critically think and apply knowledge you have learned even if not true to this story.
Discuss how the content of this paper can help prepare child protective service workers to more effectively do their job.
