Description
You now have collected data to determine standard times for activities. Maybe you have sub-stratified into various types of parts, etc. Now the question is – how to determine the proper amount of resources/equipment to satisfy the demand. This then is the purpose for this lab/homework.
Consider you own a warehouse where you need to unload material. The question you need to answer is; What is the proper number of loading docks to optimize your operation?
Assume the following:
a delivery arrives on time every 60 minutes.
the average time to unload the truck is normally distributed as 120 minutes with a standard deviation of 30 minutes (you obtained this from data collection.
Q1 – Provide a screen shot of your Extend Sim model in your Word document.
Q2 – Assuming one loading dock – provide the dock utilization and the queue length. What is your conclusion? What is the probability you will you will exceed 10 hours 600 minutes of “dock time”? Provide Excel graphs in your Word document.
Q3 – What is the change in dock utilization and queue length if you add 1 loading dock (i.e., total of 2). What is the probability you will exceed 9 hours of dock time to satisfy the demand (i.e,. exceed 540 minutes). Provide Excel graphs in your Word document.
Q4 – What is the change in dock utilization and queue length if you add 1 more loading dock (i.e., total of 4). What is the probability you will exceed 9 hours of dock time to satisfy the demand (i.e,. exceed 540 minutes). Provide Excel graphs in your Word document.
Q5 – Propose any change to the system – you may change the schedule, you may change the unload time, whatever you prefer. Demonstrate the projected results of the proposed change.
Q6 – Discuss how you would apply this technique to any problem or process you are familiar with (one brief paragraph)
Q7 – Have you ever used such a technique? Did you find this interesting and beneficial?
