Description of the question
The United States possesses more than 90,000 metric tons of nuclear waste that must be stored safely. This substance is incapable of exploding! However, it will be hazardous for at least 100,000 years or longer, necessitating particular handling.
We’ll look into one nuclear waste disposal option: dropping it into a deep-sea trench.
Here’s how it works:
Place the radioactive waste in bullet-shaped steel and concrete containers.
Dump the containers from a ship’s rear as it goes through a trench. The containers will be moving quickly enough to bury themselves in the mud when they hit the seafloor first.
Plate motions will gradually transport the material down into the mantle, where it will be lost forever!
You will determine whether or not this is a good plan that will work. You’ll think of things like:
Accretionary wedges are a type of accretionary wedge that is used (page 276 in your book). Do you believe accretionary wedges have flaws? Or perhaps large earthquakes? Or a lot of rock layer folding (bending)? Or what about landslides? If that’s the case, how can these factors affect nuclear waste containers?
At convergent plate borders, composite volcanoes are common (see figure 4.19 on page 109). Explosive eruptions of these volcanoes are common, spewing large amounts of volcanic ash into the atmosphere.
Then you’ll evaluate whether or not this is a good concept in question 6. (I won’t give you a grade based on your opinion, so be honest.)
NOTE: This is a geology homework, therefore you don’t need to know much about nuclear waste to complete it. If you have any questions or want to learn more about radioactive waste, go to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radioactive waste. You can also ask me, as usual!
Download the homework here: Trench HW.pdf (another fillable PDF).
There is one basic graph that you can create with Acrobat Reader’s drawing feature. You can, however, use a different app or print and scan the homework if you like.
If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask!
Have fun deciding what to do with our nuclear waste as a policymaker!
