Play Day
We are in the middle of a global pandemic. Fear, anxiety, stress, and depression are running rampant in families everywhere. Perhaps even for you, this time has become challenging. Remember in elementary school how exciting it was to finish your work around 10 oam and the teacher would ask us to line up so we could go to RECESS! Can you recall the joy you felt being able to run around the playground and do what you wanted for a little while with your friends. Those few moments were liberating.
Let’s see what it’s like to play now! Do you believe play is beneficial? Then why don’t we do it more often. Play is subjectively defined but I want you to arrange to have a play day with a focus on you playing-whatever play looks like for you. Do what you like and just play! Consider things you like to play with. Perhaps even play with some things that you played with as a child. For instance, when my mother was little she loved playing jacks. She bought some and taught me how to play jacks when I was a child. I haven’t seen jacks in years, but came across some in the store and purchased them for myself. I keep them on my dresser and sometimes I’ll play with them. It’s so fun to me.
What can you do to play?
Make time for yourself and play. After you spend some time playing, think about what it felt like to play with your things:
Share with your peers:
What did you play with/How did you play?
What did it feel like to play and share how you benefitted from doing so?
Does examining your own experiences in playing help you understand children’s experiences in playing?
