NURSING ISSUE PAPER
The purpose of this assignment is to help students learn to write in the style of a professional nurse and to help students identify, explore, and discuss an issue that is important to nursing practice. Students will write a 1500-2000 word paper (excluding title and reference pages) on a current nursing topic. The goal is for students to gain a better perspective of the issue, including historical context, current knowledge, and future nursing implications. The paper will be submitted in 3 parts (draft I/part I, draft II/part II and Final Paper). The paper should follow APA style. As part of APA style, the paper should include: a title page, abstract, and reference page(s). Parts I and II build upon each other to become one cohesive final paper.
This is an academic paper and should have a professional tone. That means you should not use first person voice or contractions. Likewise, you will not be including your opinion(s) in this paper. The presented material will be based on your review of literature with regards to your topic and therefore based on research/evidence/data/stats. You must provide in-text citations for any information that is not common knowledge. Although not required, I strongly encourage the use of titles (APA style of course) to enhance the flow of the paper.
Paper Topic:
Below are some suggested broad topics but feel free to write about another current nursing issue. Please reach out if you are not sure if your topic is appropriate. When selecting your topic/issue, I strongly encourage you to select a topic of interest and do a quick search to ensure there is adequate research on your topic of interest.
Nursing staff shortages
Workplace violence/ hazards
Poor self-care among nurses
Substance abuse among nurses
Mental health issues among nurses
Paper Layout/Format:

Provide a title page using APA format.
Abstract:
Provide a concise summary of your paper (no more than 250 words). Include a list of key words as required with APA style.
Body of Text:
Introduction:
The 1stparagraph is your introduction. It should explain why the topic is important to nurses. Key terms related to the issue (if relevant) should be defined. This paragraph must include the thesis/purpose statement and should include 1 credible reference (i.e.; government or academic websites or peer-reviewed research articles).
Brief Review of the Literature:
In the next 3-4 paragraphs, students should summarize what is known about the topic using current (no more than 5 years old), peer-reviewed. In other words, students should summarize what studies have been done and the findings. At least 3 research articles should be included in this section.
Discussion:
In the last 3-4 paragraphs, discuss how nursing practice has been or could be impacted by this issue and suggest 1-2 strategies that could help improve the issue in the workplace. Support your claim(s) with at least one additional source (government website, peer-reviewed journal article).
Conclusion:
Provide a clear and concise summary of what has been learned through exploration of the topic as it relates to nursing practice.
Reference Page:
Here you should include a list of your sources in alphabetical order using APA style, 7th edition. 3 of the references must be peer-reviewed research articles.
KEY TERMS:
Research article: A research article is a detailed account of a study conducted by researchers. It includes an introduction to the problem, background information on the problem, a methods section (how the study was conducted), results (statistical findings) and a discussion (what do these findings mean and implications). Research articles are not a review of the literature, meta-analysis, or CEU articles.
Peer-reviewed: means articles that were written by experts and reviewed by a panel of experts in the field prior to publications. This ensures quality research has been conducted. Journals will report if they are peer-reviewed. You can also select to search for peer-reviewed articles only when using search engines such as PubMed.
Current: Current typically refers to publications within the last 5 years. It is appropriate to use older works when that is the most current information on the topic.
